Brilliant Directories gives you the membership machinery and asks you to bring, buy or prompt the listings; Ever Works produces the directory itself and owns it in your repositories. Brilliant Directories fills a directory in two ways: you buy Instant Business Data credits — one credit per imported listing, each with an AI-written description — or you run credit-metered Skills that add one to three blog, event or job items per run. Ever Works researches the topic itself. Its pipeline discovers candidates, extracts and deduplicates them, classifies them into a taxonomy, writes each entry with a long-form page, captures screenshots, checks every source both for reachability and for whether it is actually a specific, accurate source for that item, and generates A-vs-B comparison pages from web research. The directory kind is the most mature thing Ever Works ships; dedicated blog-post and landing-copy writers are still rolling out, so if scheduled blog articles are the point, the Skills above are the more finished feature today.
Both platforms now work while you sleep, and Brilliant Directories deserves credit for its 2026 Routines: three Skills, hourly to weekly, each run doing live web search and costing credits. Ever Works re-runs its whole research pipeline on seven cadences from hourly to monthly, retries failed runs and pauses a schedule after repeated failures, and its named Agents carry budgets that are enforced before an AI call is made. Every change — a refreshed entry, a new comparison, a community submission — lands as a commit or pull request on the data repository, checked by quality gates and a merge policy you configure, so you can see exactly what the AI changed and revert it with Git.
Brilliant Directories lets you edit the frontend source on every plan, which is more than most hosted builders offer. The backend stays proprietary, nothing is kept in a repository or under version control, and there is no way to run the platform outside their infrastructure — the managed dedicated-server tiers are still their servers in their rack. The export add-on hands you a CSV of members, inquiries and posts and is explicitly not a site migration. Ever Works gives every Work three Git repositories in your own account — data, Markdown index and website — clones the template so you can change anything, and the runtime is open source under AGPLv3 with no paid feature tier: run it with Docker Compose or Kubernetes, or on your own machine. Ever Works runs Missions that propose Ideas that become Works, staffed by named Agents with scopes and budgets, so one goal grows into many self-maintaining directories; Store and Company builders are coming soon on the same model. On the business layer Brilliant Directories is ahead and this page says so: the Ever Works directory template ships fixed plan tiers with checkout across four payment providers and a customer portal, paid sponsor placements with admin approval, and newsletter capture — but no configurable plan catalog with proration and dunning, no lead matching, no email campaigns and no native mobile apps.
