Dyad is the local-first answer to hosted app builders: a free desktop app for macOS and Windows that needs no account, runs on your own API keys or on local models through Ollama and LM Studio, writes a React/Vite or Next.js codebase into a Git repository on your disk, previews it in-app with a running dev server, and turns every AI change into a commit you can diff and restore. It has grown a serious agent loop — per-tool consent, Explorer and Implementer sub-agents, generated and recorded Playwright tests, a security panel — plus real GitHub, Supabase, Neon and Coolify integrations, with Pro ($20/month) and Max ($79/month) tiers adding hosted credits, web search and an experimental Cloud Sandbox that runs the app remotely behind shareable preview links. Ever Works starts earlier and runs longer: it researches the topic, writes the publishable content, generates the site from a template, deploys it to a real address, and re-runs that loop on a cadence you set. The differences that survive a fair reading are about what gets produced and when: Dyad builds custom web apps and nothing in it runs unless you are in the chair, while Ever Works produces content-rich business sites and keeps working on a schedule with budgets, quality gates and a merge policy around it. Dyad leads decisively on the private, no-sign-up local experience, the live preview and visual editing, app backends and mobile output; Ever Works leads on research, content, autonomy, teams, and a hosted or self-hosted server that does not depend on a laptop staying open.
Dyad’s agent can search, fetch and crawl the web mid-run on the Pro tier, but what it produces is application code; the words on the site are yours to prompt for, and there is no content layer beside the repo. Ever Works treats the research as the job: its standard pipeline analyzes the domain, discovers entries through web search, extracts and deduplicates them, assigns categories and tags, validates sources and captures screenshots, then writes the descriptions, SEO metadata and A-vs-B comparison pages — and generates the code to present it all. That pipeline is deepest today for directory-style content; Blog, Website and Landing Page Works are wired end to end but ride the same items pipeline while dedicated post and landing-copy generators catch up.
Every Dyad mode — Build, Ask, Plan, Agent — starts when you type, and the app has no scheduler; when the laptop closes, the project stops. Ever Works makes the loop the default: scheduled updates on seven cadences from hourly to monthly, with automatic retry and a pause after repeated failures, Agent heartbeats on a cron, scheduled Missions that keep proposing Ideas, and auto-build, once the Work agent is switched on. Around that loop sit controls reshaped for unattended work: spend caps enforced before an AI call runs, quality gates that send red work back instead of to you, and a merge policy that starts conservative — Agents open pull requests, people merge — and loosens per Work or per Agent.
Both products put the code in a Git repository you own, and Dyad does this well: every version is a commit, with GitHub push and pull built in. Ever Works commits the content and the Knowledge Base alongside the code, with a Work Changelog, so an overnight run is a reviewable, reversible diff rather than a change in a Supabase or Neon database. On licensing the honest framing is about gating, not permissiveness: Dyad’s core is Apache-2.0 — more permissive than AGPL for anyone embedding it — but its agent loop, tools, visual editing and themes sit under the Functional Source License, and web search, sub-agents, Turbo Edits and the Cloud Sandbox are Pro-gated in code. Ever Works is AGPLv3 with no feature behind a commercial tier, runs on the model keys you bring — eleven provider plugins, including local Ollama, LM Studio and vLLM servers — and ships as a server you can self-host on Docker Compose or Kubernetes or leave to the managed cloud, not only as an app on one machine.
Dyad is a single-user desktop tool: one person on one machine, with Explorer and Implementer sub-agents inside a chat. Ever Works is a business model: a Mission keeps proposing Ideas, accepted Ideas become Works from prebuilt templates, and named Agents with their own budgets, heartbeats and permission flags (every flag off by default) keep each Work moving — organized into nested Teams with an org chart, and Work Members with Manager, Editor and Viewer roles. One goal can grow into many self-maintaining sites — and, on the roadmap, stores and whole companies — hosted by us or on infrastructure you run.
