OpenClaw is a single-user personal agent runtime with no organizational model, so this page compares it on the agent-workforce half of Ever Works only: it builds no website, runs no content pipeline and owns no repository. OpenClaw is an MIT-licensed personal agent runtime you install yourself: a local gateway daemon that holds your model keys and gives an agent real shell, file, browser, web and media tools, driven from the messaging apps you already use rather than a vendor’s chat tab. Because it is a single-user runtime with no organizational model and no first-party managed plan, this page compares it only on the half of Ever Works that is an autonomous agent workforce — there is no website generator, no content pipeline, no template and no deploy target on the other side, so there is no builder to compare. On the workforce half it is genuinely strong: cron automations, a heartbeat that wakes the agent on its own, durable TaskFlow orchestration, subagents, persistent memory, a skills layer and an enormous plugin ecosystem, all running happily on a laptop or a Raspberry Pi. Ever Works points the same kind of autonomy at a deliverable: Missions become Ideas, Ideas become Works, and named Agents research the niche, write the content, generate the site from a template, deploy it and keep improving it on the cadence you set — with spend caps enforced before every AI call, approvals, quality gates and a merge policy around them. The honest trade is breadth against a product: OpenClaw will talk with you from almost any chat app, drive the whole machine and generate images, music, video and speech, where Ever Works answers conversationally from Slack, drives a headless browser rather than your desktop, and ships a website plus the repository behind it.
OpenClaw does not generate a website, write publishable content, own a repository or deploy anything — its documented tool families are shell, files, browser, web, messaging and media, and that is a deliberate design rather than an omission. Ever Works points its agents at a deliverable: a Mission produces Ideas, an Idea becomes a Work, and the standard pipeline researches the domain, discovers and extracts entries, deduplicates them, assigns categories and tags, validates sources, captures screenshots, writes the descriptions, SEO metadata and A-vs-B comparison pages, generates the site from a template and deploys it to a real address. That pipeline is deepest for directory-style Works today; Blog, Website and Landing Page Works are wired end to end at the platform level but still ride the same items pipeline while dedicated post and landing-copy writers catch up.
Both run with nobody in the chair. The difference is what surrounds the autonomy. Every Ever Works Agent carries a spend cap — hourly, daily, weekly or monthly — checked before every AI call, with auto-pause after repeated failures, and budgets also sit on the Work, Mission, Idea and account; OpenClaw gives you real usage and cost visibility plus context limits, but no budget object and no enforced spend cap, so a hard ceiling has to be set in your model provider’s own console. Around that sit approvals and escalations, guardrail modes, quality gates that send work back instead of to you, a configurable merge policy, and a branch with a private checkout per Task so parallel Agents cannot overwrite each other. Security belongs in the same paragraph and deserves a fair reading: most of the exposure reported around OpenClaw came from deployment failures — gateways published to the internet without authentication — the named CVEs are patched, and 2.0 materially improved credential handling with masked credential prompts whose values never enter the transcript or the model’s context, an opt-in egress proxy that binds each stored secret to approved destination hosts, a plugin trust review before install, and explicit session permission modes. The structural point is the plain one: an agent with full machine access is a large blast radius, and their defaults have historically been permissive — sandboxing is opt-in — where every Ever Works Agent permission flag starts at false.
Both are open source and both self-host, and OpenClaw’s MIT licence is more permissive than Ever Works’ AGPLv3: if you need to embed a runtime inside a closed product, that is a real advantage and a fair reason to pick them. The Ever Works claim is a different one — AGPLv3 with no paid feature tier, so no capability is gated behind a commercial licence — and it is mostly about what survives you switching tools. OpenClaw’s state is its own: conversations, memory, tasks and flows living in a state directory and a SQLite file on the host. Ever Works writes the product itself into Git repositories you own — the content, the site code, each Work’s Knowledge Base and the Agent identity files, all as reviewable commits — so the whole lifecycle is portable whether you run the platform yourself or let us host it.
OpenClaw can run several configured agents and spawn subagents behind an allowlist under ephemeral session keys — by default a subagent cannot spawn children of its own — and 2.0 added shared sessions, but there is no organizational model: no teams, no roles, no per-agent budget, no tenancy. Ever Works is built around persistent staff: named Agents with a scope, a model, a heartbeat cadence, a budget and granular permission flags, grouped into Teams with an org chart and scorecards, collaborating through Tasks so every agent-to-agent exchange leaves an audit trail, and reading from a per-Work Knowledge Base that compounds instead of starting cold each run. Above them sit Missions and Ideas, so one goal grows into many self-maintaining Works, plus Organizations and Tenants so several people and several Companies coexist in one account. A Company here is a workspace with its own Organization, Teams and Agents — incorporation through a formation provider is planned, and the Store kind is coming soon.

Choose OpenClaw when what you want is a personal assistant with hands rather than a business that ships: one runtime on your own hardware that you can talk with from WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, iMessage, Matrix or two dozen other apps, that can drive the whole machine — shell, files, a real browser, the processes running on it — generate images, music, video and speech, wake itself on a schedule, and run for the price of your model tokens under a permissive MIT licence that no legal team will argue with. If you are technical, want no vendor account at all, and are happy to harden the gateway yourself, it is an unusually capable free runtime, and its ecosystem is far larger than ours.
