Design-led all-in-one website builder
Squarespace is a polished, hosted builder that bundles a visual editor with commerce, bookings, invoicing, memberships and AI drafting assistants. Ever Works researches the topic, writes the content, generates the code from a template you own, and keeps the site improving on a schedule — content and code in your Git.
Squarespace is the design-first way to put a business online: a drag-and-drop editor with around 200 curated templates, managed hosting with SSL and 24/7 support, and a store, invoicing, memberships and donations under one subscription — with appointment scheduling on add-on tiers and email campaigns as a paid add-on. Since 2024 it has layered generative AI over that product — Blueprint AI turns a short questionnaire into a starter site with copy and imagery, no-credit text tools draft and rewrite blocks, a chat assistant edits pages, scanners audit SEO, and AI Visibility reports whether ChatGPT and Gemini cite your site. Every one of those tools is invoked by a person inside the editor; nothing researches a topic, writes a body of content, or keeps the site improving on a cadence. Ever Works starts from the other end: it researches the subject, writes the content, generates the code from a template you own, deploys it, and re-runs that pipeline on a schedule, with content and code committed to your Git and an AGPLv3 runtime you can self-host. The trade is real — Squarespace wins on the visual editor, commerce and the bundle of business tools today; Ever Works wins on research, autonomy and ownership.
Squarespace’s AI drafts the block you point it at — a paragraph, a product description, a blog post, an alt text — and Blueprint AI produces a starter site with generated copy you then edit. Ever Works treats research and writing as the product: a 15-step pipeline analyzes the domain, runs web searches, extracts and deduplicates real entries, validates their sources, assigns categories and tags and captures screenshots, so a directory Work is populated on day one. Blog, website and landing-page Works are wired end to end but still run on that same items pipeline while their dedicated writers roll out, so today the content lead is strongest for directories and content sites.
Squarespace’s automations are commerce and email-campaign triggers — auto-tagging, trigger filters, conditional paths — and every design or content change is a person opening the editor. Ever Works re-runs its research and generation pipeline on seven cadences from hourly to monthly, with retries and an automatic pause after repeated failures; named Agents wake on their own heartbeats; Missions tick and can auto-build accepted Ideas into Works once the Work agent is switched on. Governance is there when you want it — quality gates, merge policy and a branch per Task — but upkeep is the default state, not a new editing session.
A Squarespace site runs only on Squarespace: there is no self-hosting, no code export of a 7.1 site, and the GitHub-connected Developer Mode is confined to the legacy 7.0 platform and outside the scope of its support team. The content export is a WordPress-format XML that leaves store pages and products, style settings and custom CSS behind and cannot be imported into another Squarespace site. Ever Works creates three repositories in your GitHub account per Work — data, markdown and website — so both the content and the generated Next.js or Astro code are version-controlled by you. The runtime itself is open source under AGPLv3 with no paid feature tier, runs on Docker or Kubernetes, deploys to Vercel, a cluster you control or the managed hosting path, and the same REST API drives the dashboard, the CLI and an MCP server that exposes a curated whitelist of those verbs to your AI client.
Squarespace organizes around one site and the business tools attached to it. Ever Works organizes around a goal: a Mission proposes Ideas, accepted Ideas become Works, and named Agents with a scope, a heartbeat and a budget keep each one moving — so one intent can grow into a portfolio of self-maintaining sites (and, on the roadmap, stores and whole companies), not a single site you keep editing.

Choose Squarespace when you want one vendor to design, host and run a complete small-business presence — a beautiful site with a store, appointment booking, invoicing, memberships, donations and email campaigns on a single account, with 24/7 support — and you are happy to author and maintain the content yourself with AI drafting to help. It is also the better pick when you need a visual drag-and-drop editor with a live preview, roughly 200 designer templates, an SEO scanner and AI Visibility tracking in the dashboard, contact and lead-capture forms out of the box, AI image generation, or in-product domain purchase and business email today, and you do not need to take the site’s code with you.
