Open-source publishing platform
Ghost is the open-source publishing platform that bundles a themed site, an editor, newsletters and paid memberships — and expects you to write every word. Ever Works researches the topic, writes structured content into a repository you own, generates the site from a template, and keeps working on a schedule — posts and code in your Git.
Ghost is a mature, open-source (MIT) Node.js publishing platform run by a non-profit foundation: one install gives you a themed site, a polished editor with edit history, email newsletters with automated welcome sequences, native paid memberships on Stripe with no platform fee from the Publisher plan up, cookie-free first-party analytics, threaded comments and — since 6.0 — a followable ActivityPub profile. It is a writing and publishing tool, not a writing agent: it ships no AI that writes anything, posts live in its MySQL database rather than in Git, and self-hosting means running Node and MySQL on Ubuntu with Mailgun for bulk newsletter delivery. Ever Works starts from a topic rather than a blank editor: its pipeline researches the subject and writes structured, sourced content into a data repository you own, generates the site from a Next.js template into a second repository, deploys it, and re-runs on a cadence from hourly to monthly with budgets, quality gates and a merge policy around it. Its Blog Work kind is wired end to end — the kind chip, a Posts tab, a per-blog works.yml with cadence, topics prompt and posts per run — but the writer behind it is the same items pipeline every Work gets today, and a dedicated long-form post generator is still rolling out. The honest split: Ghost leads on the reader-facing publishing business (editor, newsletter, paywall, analytics, fediverse) and on licence permissiveness; Ever Works leads on AI authorship, Git-native ownership of content and code, and unattended operation.
Ghost gives a human author an excellent surface to publish and, as of September 2026, no AI that writes anything — no topic research, no drafting, no refresh of stale posts; third-party writers reach it through the Admin API. Ever Works treats the research as the job: its standard pipeline analyzes the domain, discovers entries through web search, extracts and deduplicates them, assigns categories and tags, validates sources, then writes the descriptions and SEO metadata — reading the Knowledge Base’s style, brand and persona documents on every run. That pipeline is deepest for directory-style content today. A Blog Work is wired end to end — the kind, a Posts tab, a works.yml with cadence, topics prompt and posts per run — but its Posts tab is fed by that same items pipeline while the dedicated long-form post generator rolls out.
Ghost publishes what you finish, and it will hold a post for a publication time you choose — but nothing inside it decides what to write next or revisits what you already published. Ever Works makes the loop the default: scheduled updates on seven cadences from hourly to monthly with a 15-minute retry and auto-pause after repeated failures, Agent heartbeats on a cron, scheduled Missions that keep proposing Ideas, and auto-build, once the Work agent is switched on. Around that loop sit controls built for unattended work: spend caps enforced before an AI call runs, quality gates that send red work back to the Agent instead of to you, and a merge policy that starts conservative — Agents open pull requests, people merge — and loosens per Work or per Agent.
In Ghost, posts live in its MySQL database and the site is a Handlebars theme inside Ghost’s runtime; you can pull content out through the Admin API, but there is no Git-as-source-of-truth workflow. Ever Works creates three repositories in your own GitHub account for every Work: a data repository holding posts, pages, assets, the works.yml configuration and the Knowledge Base; a website repository holding the Next.js template code, kept aligned with upstream by an hourly template-update check; and a readable Markdown index. An overnight run is a diff you can review and revert. On licensing, Ghost takes the honest win: its MIT licence is more permissive than AGPLv3 for anyone embedding it, and its self-hosted core is complete. Ever Works is plain AGPLv3, self-hostable with no licence fee and no revenue share — the free Community Edition carries the whole agent loop with unlimited employees and agents — while the paid Editions add a commercial licence lifting the AGPLv3 obligations, plus credits, concurrency, seats and the team integrations. It runs on the AI provider you choose — eleven provider plugins, including local models — and self-hosts on Docker Compose or Kubernetes, or runs on the managed cloud.
Ghost’s staff model is human authors with roles, capped per hosted plan at 1, 3, 15 or unlimited staff users. Ever Works adds an AI organization: a Mission keeps proposing Ideas, accepted Ideas become Works from prebuilt templates, and named Agents with their own budgets, heartbeats and permission flags (every flag off by default) keep each Work moving — organized into Teams with an org chart, alongside Work Members with Manager, Editor and Viewer roles. One goal can grow into many self-maintaining sites — and, on the roadmap, stores and whole companies.

Choose Ghost when you or your team will write every post yourselves and want the reader-facing business — a polished editor, segmented newsletters and welcome sequences, paid membership tiers with no platform fee, comments, native analytics and a fediverse presence — working together out of the box, on a permissive MIT licence, hosted by a non-profit or on your own Ubuntu and MySQL stack. It is also the safer pick when you need a mature headless CMS with stable Content and Admin APIs today, when a paywall and subscriber revenue matter more to you than AI authorship, or when you want to draft in a dashboard at all: Ever Works has no in-app post editor, so posts are Markdown files you or an Agent change in the repository.
